TERRACARDIO PLUS® is a patent-protected probiotic formula combining three different strains of Lactobacillus plantarum (CECT 7527, 7528 and 7529) protected by patent WO 2011/042333 and an omega-3 source as Linseed oil (Alpha-linolenic acid). This probiotic has beneficial properties for cholesterol metabolism by acting on both dietary and endogenous cholesterol.

What is a Probiotic?

Probiotics are live micro-organisms which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.

If you are looking to complement diet and lifestyle measures to support cholesterol health with the added benefit of Omega-3, TERRACARDIO PLUS® may be a suitable option for you.

Medicinal Ingredients (per capsule): Lactobacillus plantarum……….1.2 billion CFU and 600mg of Linum usitatissimum

Cautions: This product is intended for adults 18 years  of age or older. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised  to consult with their healthcare practitioner prior to using this product

Storage: Store at room temperature

Safety and drug interactions: Keep out of reach of children. If you are on antibiotics, take at least 2-3 hours before or after your antibiotics. If you have fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhea or severe abdominal pain, consult a health care practitioner prior to use. If symptoms of digestive upset (e.g. diarrhea) occur, worsen, or presist beyond 3 days, discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner. If you have an immune-compromised condition (e.g. AIDS, lymphoma, patients undergoing long-term corticosteroid treatment), do not use this product. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

How Does it Work?

Bile salts are necessary for the digestion of fats from the diet. These bile salts are synthesized in the liver and secreted into the intestine. For synthesizing these bile salts cholesterol is required and is extracted from blood. Once in the intestine, most of the bile salts are re-absorbed and transported back to the liver to be re-used. TERRACARDIO PLUS® inhibits the re-absorption of bile salts and facilitates their excretion through the intestine. In order to produce new bile salts, the liver needs to extract more cholesterol from blood and as a result, blood cholesterol levels are reduced.

TERRACARDIO PLUS® is able to ferment the fibers normally found in the diet to produce short chain fatty acids, such as propionic acid and butyric acid, which have known anti-inflammatory and hypocholesterolemic activity by inhibiting its synthesis in the liver. TERRACARDIO PLUS® can also reduce the absorption of dietary cholesterol by immobilizing and incorporating dietary cholesterol into the bacterial membrane and through cholesterol metabolizing by specific enzymatic reactions inside the bacterial cells.

Alpha-linolenic acid is an essential omega-3 fatty acid that has been shown to provide a wide range of health benefits including a lower risk of coronary heart disease. Since the body cannot synthesize omega-3 fats, it must be obtained through food.

TERRACARDIO PLUS®‘s formula is produced and manufactured under GMP conditions. The product is available in freeze-dried form.

Cardiovascular diseases refer to a group of disorders that relate to the heart and blood vessels.

These may include:
1) Coronary Heart Disease: Disease of the blood vessels supplying the heart muscle
2) Cerebrovascular Disease: Disease of the blood vessels supplying the brain
3) Peripheral Arterial Disease: Disease of the blood vessels supplying the arms and legs
4) Rheumatic Heart Disease: Damage to the heart muscle and heart valves from rheumatic fever, caused by streptococcal bacteria
5) Congenital Heart Disease: Malformations of heart structure existing at birth
6) Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism: Blood clots in the leg veins which can dislodge and move to the heart and lungs

Heart attacks and strokes are usually acute events mainly caused by a blockage that prevents blood from flowing to the heart or brain. The most common reason for this is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the blood vessels that supply the heart or brain.

Cardiovascular diseases can be considered an epidemic in developed countries (World Health Organization: Cardiovascular disease profile, 2005). Their prevalence makes it the primary cause of death in the world, especially in western countries (NCHS, 2007; British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group, 2005).

Having high levels of cholesterol in the blood is the main risk factor for any form of cardiovascular disease. One of the major drawbacks of having a high cholesterol level is that other risk factors, such as hypertension or smoking, do not merely add to the risk, but multiply it.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance which is essential to our health and well-being. In our body, cholesterol originates from two different sources: approximately 20% is from the diet and 80% is produced in the body by the liver. Some of its functions are to repair blood vessels, create cell membranes, vitamin D using sunlight, hormones, etc.

Cholesterol is carried through the bloodstream by lipoproteins in two different forms: LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol. Cholesterol becomes a risk factor when LDL cholesterol (also known as “bad cholesterol”) levels rise too high.

What Causes High Cholesterol Levels?

High cholesterol levels can be caused by both exogenous and/or endogenous factors:

Risks of High Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a major risk factor for Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) and stroke. According to results from the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS) the percentage of Canadians with unhealthy levels of total cholesterol is 57% in 40 to 59 year olds and 44% in 60 to 79 year olds.

The percentage of Canadians with unhealthy LDL (bad) cholesterol levels is 12% in 20 to 39 year olds and 40% in 40 to 59 year olds. This number decreased in older adults where 26% of 60 to 79 year olds had unhealthy LDL cholesterol levels.

High cholesterol increases the risk of atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries), heart attack and stroke.

Healthy State: LDL circulates in the bloodstream carrying cholesterol to the cells of the body and repairing any damage to the blood vessels.

High Cholesterol: If LDL levels get too high, cholesterol can deposit in the arteries forming a plaque which gradually grows bigger and bigger

Disease State: Plaque growth eventually restricts the flow of blood. Blood pressure increases and there is a high risk of rupture, heart attack and stroke.

Cholesterol-lowering efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum

Cholesterol-lowering efficacy of Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 7527, 7528 and 7529 in hypercholesterolaemic adults (Click here to access full article)

Previous studies have indicated that supplementation with probiotic bacteria may improve lipid metabolism. A study was aimed at investigating the effects of a mixture of three strains of Lactobacillus plantarum (CECT 7527, CECT 7528 and CECT 7529) on cholesterol lowering efficacy in hypercholesterolaemic patients.

A total of sixty volunteers (thirty participants in the placebo group and thirty counterparts in the L. plantarum group), aged 18–65 years old, participated in a controlled, randomized, double-blind trial. The study group received one capsule daily containing 1.2 x 109 CFU of Lactobacillus strains in a unique dose; the placebo group consumed the same product without bacteria for 12 weeks.

A significant reduction of 13.6% in plasma total cholesterol (TC) levels was observed after 12 weeks of consumption in the L. plantarum group when compared with the placebo group. The lipidic outcomes were also analysed based on TC values at baseline: low initial values (LIV, 2000–2500 mg/l) v. high initial values (HIV, 2510–3000 mg/l). In the HIV group, the L. plantarum treatment showed a reduction after 12 weeks of consumption compared with the placebo group in TC, LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and oxidised LDL-C (17.4, 17.6 and 15.6 %, respectively). In the LIV, the L. plantarum treatment only showed a reduction after 12 weeks of consumption when compared with the placebo group in TC (9.4 %).

The present results showed that the biofunctionality of L. plantarum (CECT 7527, CECT 7528 and CECT 7529) is proportional to the cardiovascular risk of the patient, having a better effect in patients with higher levels of cholesterol.
