ABOUT TERRADENT®

TERRADENT® is a patent-protected probiotic formula combining Lactobacillus Plantarum (CECT 7481) and Lactobacillus brevis (CECT 7480) protected by patent WO 2012/022773. This probiotic has beneficial properties for maintaining a good oral health status.

What is a Probiotic?

Probiotics are live micro-organisms which when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host.

If you are looking to complement diet and lifestyle measures to support a good oral health status, TERRADENT® may be a suitable option for you.

Medicinal Ingredients (per lozenge): Lactobacillus plantarum……….0.5 billion cfu and Lactobacillus brevis ……………0.5 billion cfu

Cautions: This product is intended for adults 18 years of age or older. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are advised to consult with their healthcare practitioner prior to using this product

If symptoms of digestive upset (e.g. diarrhea) occur, worsen, or persist beyond 3 days, discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner. If you have an immune-compromised condition (e.g. AIDS, lymphoma, patients undergoing long-term corticosteroid treatment), do not use this product. Food Supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Keep in a fresh dry place.

How Does it Work?

TERRADENT®‘s probiotic strains have been specifically selected as the ones with the best performance in the prevention and treatment of oral complications, bad breath and tooth decay among others.

It has bactericidal activity against the most common oral pathogens, yet does not product significant amounts of acid therefore preserving the teeth.

TERRADENT® also helps restore the protective oral flora by competing against bad bacteria and disrupting their adhesion to the different tissue in the oral cavity.

Manufacturing

TERRADENT®‘s formula is produced and manufactured under GMP conditions. The product is available in freeze-dried form.

Regulatory Status and Quality Control

IP Status

All strains in TERRADENT® (Lactobacillus plantarum and Lactobacillus brevis) have Qualified Presumption of Safety (QPS) status from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

GUM DISEASE

The mouth contains hundreds of types of bacteria including streptococci, lactobacilli, etc. In normal conditions these bacteria work as a natural defense system for the mouth, but some factors (inadequate oral hygiene, illness, stress, poor diets) can disrupt this protective oral balance and allow bad bacteria to cause poor gum health, plaque buildup and bad breath. To keep a good oral health status, is not only important under local (mouth), esthetic or social point of view, is also a key point for the gastrointestinal well being. In fact, beyond this, recent insights have proved that the colonization or oral cavity by undesirable bacteria has an impact in the cardiovascular risk, for instance.

Gingivitis, caries and halitosis are very common oral health conditions amongst most population groups.

GINGIVITIS

Gingivitis is the inflammation of the gingival tissue which if left untreated may evolve into periodontitis which is a degenerative process of the tissue that surrounds the teeth. It involves inflammation and infection that destroys the tissues that support the teeth, including the gums, the periodontal ligaments, and the tooth sockets.

CARIES

Caries (or tooth decay) is a biofilm (plaque)-induced acid demineralization of enamel or dentin, mediated by saliva.

HALITOSIS

Halitosis (or bad breath) are terms used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing. These odors are due to compounds mostly produced by specific genus of the oral microbiota

CLINICAL TRIALS

Probiotics and Oral Health

(Click here to access full article)

Haukioja and colleagues assessed the survival in saliva and adherence to oral surfaces of various probiotics used by the dairy industry (specifically, species of both Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium). All of the strains tested survived well in saliva, but they varied widely in their capacity to adhere to the surface of teeth and oral mucosa. More specifically, the Lactobacillus species had a more superior adherence capacity than that of the Bifidobacterium species.

Anti-inflammatory Effects of Lactobacillus brevis (CD2) on Periodontal Disease

(Click here to access full article)

Riccia and colleagues studied the anti-inflammatory effects of Lactobacillus brevis in a group of patients with chronic gum disease. The treatment, which involved sucking on lozenges containing L. brevis over a period of 4 days, led to improvements in the targeted clinical parameters (plaque index, gingival index, bleeding on probing) for all patients. The authors suggested that the beneficial anti-inflammatory effects of L. brevis could be attributed to its capacity to prevent the production of nitric oxide and, consequently, the release of PGE2 and the activation of MMPs induced by the nitric oxide.38 However, L. brevis may also be antagonistic, leading to a reduction in the quantity of plaque and therefore an improvement in the gingival index.
